An ultrasound-guided breast biopsy and aspiration is a medical procedure used to obtain tissue or fluid samples from the breast for diagnostic purposes. These procedures are typically performed when a suspicious lesion or abnormality is detected on a breast ultrasound or mammogram. They are often used to investigate and diagnose breast lumps, cysts, or other abnormalities.

Why you might need it
If we happen to find a suspicious area of concern, your Lyra healthcare team might decide it is a good idea to rule out cancer. In which case, an ultrasound-guided procedure would be the next step in the process.
The Purpose

Drain fluid from a breast cyst

Early detection
-
Rule out cancer
What to Expect
You will lay on your back or side on the ultrasound table and the technologist will image the area of interest with the ultrasound device. The area will be clean with a cool soap and numbing medicine, similar to what is used by the dentist, will be injected at the site. Guided by ultrasound for precision, we focus on targeting the suspicious area or cyst accurately. The collected tissue or fluid (when indicated) is then sent to a laboratory for analysis, aiding in the determination of whether abnormalities are benign, abnormal, or cancerous. Typically, the results will be available within 3-5 business days.
