Surgical Localizations

Exam Time: 30-60 min Results Delivered in: will come from your surgeon

Surgical localization is a minimally invasive procedure that marks a specific area to assist a surgeon during surgical removal of breast or axillary tissue.  These procedures are typically performed to guide the surgeon to a precise location for the removal of a suspicious lesion, such as a tumor or abnormal tissue, during breast surgery. The goal is to ensure accuracy and efficiency in the surgical procedure. We use two forms of localization, wire localization and Magseed localization, which are determined by your surgeon.

Why you might need it

These localization techniques are commonly used in the context of breast-conserving surgeries, such as lumpectomies, where only a portion of the breast is removed while preserving the remaining healthy tissue. They help ensure the surgeon accurately targets and removes the abnormal tissue, reducing the likelihood of needing additional surgeries.

The choice between wire localization and Magseed localization depends on various factors, including the characteristics of the lesion and the surgeon’s preference. These techniques are valuable tools in the management of breast abnormalities and contribute to the precision of breast surgeries.

The Purpose

  • Accurate tissue removal

  • Preservation of healthy breast tissue

  • Minimizing re-excision rates

  • Enhancing surgical efficiency

  • Facilitating breast-conserving procedures

What to Expect

Wire Localization:

Wire localization is often used when a lesion is not easily palpable or visible on the surface of the skin. It helps guide the surgeon to the exact location of the abnormality.

Procedure:

  • Before surgery, you will typically undergo imaging studies to identify the suspicious area.
  • Once the area is numb, a thin wire is inserted precisely at the site of the abnormality.
  • The wire protrudes from the skin and serves as a guide for the surgeon during the procedure.
  • The surgeon used the wire to locate and remove the targeted tissue during surgery.

Magseed Localization:

This technique is similar to wire localization but involves the use of a tiny seed instead of a wire.

Procedure:

  • Once numb, a small seed, typically the size of a grain of rice, is inserted into the breast using a thin needle.
  • This Magseed is made of a special metal allowing the surgeon to use a handheld detector to locate it during the surgery.
  • Magseed does not emit any radiation.
  • The surgeon removes the seed and the tissue surrounding the seed at surgery.
