A stereotactic breast biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure used to obtain tissue samples from suspicious areas or abnormalities found on a mammogram.
Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
Why you might need this
If we happen to find a suspicious area of concern, a stereotactic biopsy is the next step in the process.
The Purpose
-
Evaluate findings
-
Early detection
-
Evaluate for cancer or pre-cancer
What to Expect
During a stereotactic breast biopsy, you will lay face down on the biopsy table with your breast placed on an opening in the table. You will receive local numbing medicine, similar to what is used by the dentist, to ensure the area is numb. Our specialized equipment, guided by three-dimensional coordinates, precisely directs the biopsy needle to the specific location of the abnormality. A tiny incision will be made and multiple samples will be taken for a microscopic examination to evaluate the makeup of the cells. You will be notified of the result typically within 3-5 business days of the procedure.
